(dated 30th.)

At yesterday's Cabinet meeting (29th) Baron

Shide hara referred to the improved conditions in Hongkong,

and Admiral Abo, inister of Marine, said:

"Opinions were expressed in favour of sending a

warship to Hongkong, but even if one were sent troops

could not be landed. The feelings of the Japanese

inhabitants would be relieved to some extent, but the

prior consent of the British authorities would be needed,

and at present no warship will be sent. "

"Tokyo Asahi Shinbun", 30th September, 1931.

Having received reports of contimed severe

rioting at Hongkong and danger to the life and property of Japanese residents, the Japanese Naval Authorities have despatched a warship there in order to receive reports on the spot.

Urgent orders were sent to the Gunboat "Saga",

anchored at Canton, and she reached Hongkong at noon (29th).

She was not despatched in consequence of the requests of

the Japanese residents or the desire of the Japanese Consul-

General, but in order to report to the naval authorities the frequent messages on the state of affairs which she

would receive. She is to transmit detailed reports from

Consul-General Yoshida and the Japanese Residents' Associa-

tion, and to conduct a thorough investigation of the state

of de fence and police protection.
